It's all about quality in this buisness and not just random banning.

For one thing we don't work against cheater in the first place but working FOR our community. We are in anticheating for several years and we have seen a lot which include several cheat faking or bugs which looks like cheating. So there are several reasons that we look carefully on each demo and got strict proof requirements to ensure the quality of our banlist. It's better to let one cheater go instead of banning an innocent player.

That's what steambans.com stands for and which our community wants from us.

VAC is an automated service which bans on his logs. You can't compare the two systems.

My two cents on this topic here

Well, I intend to create a replacement for both SteamBans and VAC.

I've already gotten two major server communities in the United States on board for it.

What I envision is effective, fast action, that less dependent on so much human involvement. Oh, and I bet with your current system I can make demos of "all of you" cheating. Its still to easy to fake demos even with the sb_status function. There are so many ways to fake STEAM IDs.

Yes, I am a programmer, and yes, I will build a better plugin that actually takes a more proactive approach to removing cheaters from servers.

The current anti-cheat community is entirely reactive. There needs to be pro-active approaches to removing cheaters from the servers.

I've seen too many promises and they just disappear to believe in it atm.

AutoBan was the only one for CS:S I saw released but the developer dropped off the face of the Earth and so that project died. All the others haven't been worthy at all to be a problem for cheaters.

Also, I cannot agree, in any way, the decision not to ban the following steam ID. STEAM_0:X:XXXXXX

ofc you can't agree on not banning but that's your problem.

If you are such a good coder good luck in involving the anticheat community but I would suggest you present something before making big speeches.

Heh. Most of my work hasn't been within the Steam community.

Oh the fun days of TRIBES.

I'm not entirely sure that you know what you are getting into.. The only real method of doing this is by watching players behavior.. at it's simplest level is something like the aimbot detection plugin I wrote, or the various speedhack detectors going around. People have attempted to use the clients "setinfo" commands as a method of detecting cheats, but that is very prone to false positives as any admin that wants to can set them.

So, to automatically remove cheaters based on the information that HL/HL2 gives you is fairly difficult to do, and will take quite awhile to get right.

no. we cannot take a regular status command as that can be altered to change the steam id. sb_status cannot be altered due to it's coding. This allows us to remain confident in the Steam IDs that we ban. It also makes it so someone with a grudge against you can't submit a demo of someone else hacking and replace their steam id with yours. It will alert us of this tampering and will deny the demo.

And if you really think a few weeks waiting is to much, ask how long a VAC ban can be delaied.

And i have a good hundred banned ID's in my submission list from aimbotters, speedhackers and all other possible stuff that are still not banned by VAC although some of the are up to 4 and a half years old. Every system has it's advantages and disadvantages. If not we would not need any anti-cheat system.
