Bans
An admin has a grudge on me, can he add me to the db?
NO, absolutely not. Any ban that is accepted and added into our database will before that go through a variety of stations before that can occur. All with the aim of, without any doubt, establish that the ban is correct. We have a skilled team that handles proof, and a ban needs 3 of those admins to agree that it is in fact, and without doubt, a cheater. We only accept demos as valid proof, no server logs, text messages of scans, or IRC logs of people admitting to hack. These can be added as additional info, but will not be considered proof.
How big is your ban database?
We have an auto-ban database which logs people banned around on our many servers. You can see how big that is by looking at the left top stats under "auto-bans".

We also have a STEAM_ID database, and you can see the size of that by looking at the left top stats under "Banned Steamids".
Can I get a list of bans?
No, we don't give out lists or likes of it, because we reserve the right to change the database all the time. We are the only ones that have the evidence to support the claim that the banned are really banned, and therefore we are against any shape or form that can this way make the STEAM_ID banned here spin out of control and being banned elsewhere without the solid proof that we have.
Can I search the database?
You can search for banned IDs using the DB search option on the menu.
I have been banned what now?
If our scanner banned you on a SB protected server (the SBSRV plugin will give you a kick message to go here if you want to dispute the ban), it means that we have - on the basis of solid proof - found that you at some point in time on some server cheated, and you are now not allowed to play on any of our servers on the SB network (not all steam servers, but the ones in our - SteamBans - network).

We ban according to our rules and we never ban unless there is sufficient proof supporting the ban. All is not lost though. Although we have developed a system to minimize it, we do not rule out human errors. We have a protest ban process.

You can read more about the protest ban process and your rights in this using the "How to protest a ban" guide located under "useful info" on the front page. The actual protest can be filed under "Protest Ban" link in your menu (you need to be logged in).
Do you have proof?
Yes, we are very proud of our proof process. No bans are accepted without indisputable proof of cheating, and we do not ban for other reasons than cheating.
When an admin submit a ban, it will be handled with utter precision. We analyze each demo submitted carefully, and we are proud of having if not some of the world's best, then some of Europe's best demo viewers on board.

We relocate evidence older then 4 months but it is still available for us if needed be. This means that we can back up every single ban in our db with evidence.
How do I record a good demo?
If you want to record a demo that would have a lesser chance to be dismissed on technical issues you should read:

  • Howto: Record a good demo
  • Do I have to review my demos before submitting?
Yes, SteamBans request all users that are about to submit their evidence to review it and make sure that it complies with all the mentioned points in the proof requirements.
What is the handling time of a submission?
The handling time of submissions can vary a lot, this depends on if you met the Proof Requirements, included any possibly needed files (such as map, models) and recorded enough proof. Bare in mind 3 admins need to vote and possibly discuss, other people submitting and thus the amount of submissions (or backlog) may influence the handling time as well.
    What is sb_status?
SteamBans has developed a safe way to validate STEAM_IDs, and it's called SB_STATUS. The command is open on all SteamBans protected servers, and if you see a cheater you simply record a demo, and while recording type sb_status, and then afterwards submit it to SteamBans.

The command sb_status is part of SBidSECURITY™ which come with our plugins to protect the servers.

With SBidSECURITY™ any demo recorded on the SteamBans Server Plugin server is added a great deal of security in terms of validation of ids. SBidSECURITY™ encrypts STEAM_IDs and returns a unique code that ensures that if a STEAM_ID is changed in the demo (to perhaps frame a person) SteamBans admins will easily be able to pick up on this and take action.

Not only does SBidSECURITY™ add security to the personal demos recorded on a SBSRV server, but it also makes a log in the SteamBans database once someone uses it, and this way there is a double security surrounding it, virtually making it impossible to circumvent. SBidSECURITY™ is making groundbreaking work within demo security in terms of validation of ids.
What is a STEAM_ID and how do I obtain it?
STEAM_ID is a way (Steam's way) of keeping track of who is who. All Steam users have different STEAM_IDs making everyone unique. If you know the STEAM_ID of someone you can add him/her to a ban-list (what SteamBans does when cheat is confirmed in use) or give them special privileges on your server. STEAM_IDs are permanent and are not changeable and therefore make up for a great way of tracking players down and sorting the good guys from the bad.

To obtain your STEAM_ID you must do the following:
    1) Launch a Steam multi-player enabled game (CS, CSS, HL, CZ etc)
    2) Connect to an internet game-server
    3) When you are connected to the server open op the console (press the key to the left of your 1-key, not on numeric keypad)
    4) Enter in console the following: "status" without the quotes and press enter
    5) Now you should see a list of players on the server. To the right of each nickname is a number starting with STEAM_0: Locate your nickname and take note of the corresponding number to the right including the STEAM_0. An example of a STEAM_ID is: STEAM_0:0:123456

A secondary and easier method of retrieving your STEAM_ID is through a tool SteamBans developed solely for the purpose of making life easier for everyone. All you got to do is to download the tool, run it and it will show you all STEAM_IDs on the computer. You can find this program (SBIF – SteamBans ID Finder) on the resources page (link on the right menu, must be logged in).
    Community
    Does it cost anything?
No, all our services and programs are currently free, and will continue to be so in the future, however you are always free to donate money to the development and maintenance of our services.
People who have donated money will gain access to an extensive array of services, including our VIP-servers where you can play - in a completely cheat-free environment - with the staff and other members who have donated.
Do I need to be member?
Yes, most of our website info and programs would need your login, and thereby also need you to sign up for the community.
There is some personal information I have to enter, why?
All our missions, services and programs rely a great deal on trust, and if we cannot trust you we cannot deliver a satisfactory service. We however guard our information with great care, and our privacy policy states we will not hand over any personal information to a third party.
If I sign up, can I then submit a ban?
No, not by signing up for the community. In order to be able to submit a ban you need to be a member of a team, or send in an application for your own team.

For more information read the "How to submit a ban" under "useful info" on the front page.
    SBRCON
    What was the SBRCON scanner?
SBRCON is not in use anymore.

Following information is provided to remember what SBRCON was.
The SBRCON scanner is a clever script that sends a single rcon status line out to your server and parses the returning for the information we want, and afterwards it will match the STEAM_ID up against the bans in our database. If there is a match it will announce to the server that a known cheater has been located and then kick/ban the person with a message to go here if (s)he wants to dispute or protest the ban.
    SBSRC
    What is SBSRC?
SBSRC is the respective counter-part for HL2 to SBSRV on HL1-engines.
Where do I download the plugin?
It's quite easy. You first need to read the guide to how you protect your server. This is located under "useful info" on the front page. Afterwards you need to agree to the terms of use of the license that comes with the plugin, and chose what license you would like (how many servers you have basically). After that you can download the latest version of the plugin and install it on your servers. The license allows you to run the same plugin on multiple servers.
Why do I need a license?
We have chosen to release the plugin under different licenses that limit how many servers you can run the plugin on. This way we get to both add security to the plugin and we also categorize the users in a way that allows us to customize the service we offer to each group. A team that only has one server they play matches on do not have the same need as a community with over 100 servers. It makes the plugin system much more agile and helps us to tailor it to your needs.
    SBSRV
    What is SBSRV?
SBSRV stands for SteamBans Server and it is the codename/project name for all server-related programs and plugins. SBSRV will develop plugins and programs that make it possible to have your server protected against known cheaters.

    Services
Can I sign up my team (clan/community)?
We have an application-system because we prefer to get a little bit of insight on the teams before we accept them into the community A single person can sign up to the community without having to be cleared by the management, but if (s)he wants access to adding bans and protecting server(s) (s)he would need to send an application.
    What is "insider"?
Insider is our joint name for all the current and future programs and services that has the direct aim to educate and help admins get better at spotting cheats, evidently making the whole of SteamBans.com more efficient and creates more respect amongst cheaters.
    What is "watchit!"?
Watchit! is our name for all current and future programs and services that take advantage of the community to notify other admins about suspected cheats that do not have the sufficient proof yet, and the admins should try and gather the evidence.
Do you plan more services in the future?
Yes, we are constantly thinking of new services and programs that follow our mission.

If you have any good ideas please forward them to ideas@steambans.com.

    Website
    What is SteamBans?
Steambans.com is a global banlist/watchlist made for the Steam technology from valve.

We have guidelines for all admins under our supervision to follow. All bans that are accepted will enter a database which then is used to protect all servers under our supervision.
    What is your mission?
Our mission is to eliminate or deteriorate cheaters from wrecking the "straight" players' fun on our protected servers.

Furthermore we want to help admins get better at catching cheaters and help them get respected for more then the power they posses.

We want to get rid of abusive admins because they can pest a server just as much as cheaters can.

We want to create a safe community for people that share our beliefs and mission.
Who do you seek to help?
We do not turn anyone down, as long as they agree to our terms, rules and have the right attitude.
    Who is your staff?
Our staff is very varied from highly skilled and respected admins from big leagues, to admins that have the right attitude and share our vision. We have talented coders and dedicated news writers.
    Can I become staff?
We will announce when and if we need staff on our website.

Currently you can find a few applicable positions on the Jobs @ SteamBans page.
    What are "points"?
Points are given when you make a positive contribution to the community. This may be in the form of a forum thread, forum post, comment on news, ban submission etc. The teams with the highest points are listed in the global ranking page, and the top 3 teams gets added benefits from being in the community.
    How does the global-ranking work?
Users earn their teams points by contributing in a positive way to the community (read what are "points"?), and the accumulated points are then weighed against other teams in order to find out what team has contributed the most, and that team is then ranked #1 globally.
Where can I enter my SteamID?
You can enter your full SteamID when you click on the UserCP option in your usermenu on the right and then by going to Site Options.
